What did Tainos do?

Agriculture

- Main crop was cassava, supplemented with a variety of other root crops including yams, sweet potatoes, and manioc

- Grew corn

- Raised cotton to make clothing

Navigation & Fishing

- Traveled between islands in large seagoing canoes, used sails & paddles

- Canoes often carved from single giant tree trunks and could accommodate 40 or more travelers

- Expert fishermen

Religion and Mythology

- Primarily polytheistic

- Believed in an overarching Creator; also worshiped the Sun, the Ocean, other powerful forces of nature

Political & Social Structure

- Lived in semi-autonomous village

- Each was governed by a chieftain

Housing

- Constructed bohios, simple homes that provided protection from sun / rain

- Made with hardwood frames / palm leaf
