His father, King Philip II, hired the philosopher Aristotle to tutor Alexander in a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, rhetoric, politics, and military strategy. Alexander's education was not confined to formal schooling, however. He also accompanied his father on military campaigns, where he gained valuable experience in leadership and warfare.
