What did Frederick Douglass grow up as in Maryland?

Frederick Douglass grew up as a slave in Maryland. He was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland, in 1818. He was owned by several different masters during his childhood and worked in the fields on plantations. Douglass did not learn to read or write until he was in his late teens, and he eventually escaped from slavery in 1838. He went on to become a prominent abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
