Ceasefire and Troop Withdrawals:
The Paris Peace Accords established a ceasefire between the United States and North Vietnam. American combat troops began withdrawing from Vietnam shortly afterward. The last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam in March 1973, marking the official end of direct American involvement in the Vietnam War.
POWs and MIAs:
The peace accords also addressed the issue of American prisoners of war (POWs) and soldiers missing in action (MIAs). North Vietnam released hundreds of American POWs within a few months of the agreement. However, the fate of many MIAs remained unresolved, leading to ongoing efforts to recover and identify the remains of American servicemen lost during the war.
North Vietnamese Offensive:
Despite the peace accords, the conflict between North Vietnam and South Vietnam continued. North Vietnamese forces launched a major offensive in March 1975, capturing several provincial capitals and advancing towards Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam.
Fall of Saigon:
In April 1975, North Vietnamese troops entered Saigon, and the South Vietnamese government surrendered. The fall of Saigon marked the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule.
Vietnamese Resettlement:
Following the North Vietnamese victory, many South Vietnamese civilians and military personnel fled the country, fearing persecution. The United States and other countries organized a massive evacuation effort to resettle Vietnamese refugees in various parts of the world.
Normalization of US-Vietnam Relations:
The normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam took several years. In 1995, the two countries established full diplomatic ties, paving the way for improved relations and cooperation on various fronts.
