History of North America

Who started Massachusetts?

Massachusetts was founded in 1620 by a group of English Puritans known as the Pilgrims. They were led by William Bradford and John Carver. The Pilgrims left England due to religious persecution and sought to establish a new colony in America where they could freely practice their religion. They arrived in what is now Provincetown Harbor on the Mayflower and eventually settled in Plymouth, which became the first permanent settlement in New England.
