How did Utah get its state motto?

Utah's state motto, “Industry,” was proposed by Wilford Woodruff, Utah's first elected governor. The word "Industry" was chosen because Utah was a territory filled with pioneers and hard-working people who had recently settled in the area. The motto was officially adopted by the Utah Legislature in 1896. It is a reminder of Utah's pioneer heritage and the state's commitment to hard work and dedication.
