History of North America

What is the origin name of colony New York?

The colony of New York originated from the Dutch colony of New Netherland, which was established in the early 17th century. The Dutch settlement began as a trading post on the island of Manhattan and grew into a thriving colony with a diverse population. The English took control of the colony in 1664 and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York, who was the brother of King Charles II of England. The English administration brought various changes to the colony, including instituting English laws and establishing the Anglican Church.
