The Spanish used a labor system for the exploitation of indigenous peoples called the encomienda system and imported enslaved indigenous individuals and enslaved Africans to exploit the new agricultural economies, mostly through sugar cane crops that required a lot of hard physical work done by slaves under very dangerous tropical temperatures.
