What is a Earl of Durham?

Title and background

The Earl of Durham is a title in the Peerage of England, created in 1833 for John George Lambton, 1st Viscount Lambton. He was a prominent politician who served as Lord Privy Seal from 1830 to 1833 and as the first Governor General of British North America from 1838 to 1841.
