History of North America

What were 3 main cause of the civil war?

1. Slavery: The South was dependent on slavery for its economy, while the North was increasingly opposed to the institution. This issue became a major political battleground, and ultimately led to the secession of the Southern states and the outbreak of war.

2. States' rights: The South believed that states had the right to nullify federal laws that they deemed unconstitutional. This view clashed with the North's belief in a strong central government.

3. Westward expansion: The acquisition of new territories in the West led to a dispute over whether slavery would be allowed in these new states. This issue also contributed to the growing tension between the North and South.
