History of North America

What side wanted slavery during the civil war?

The Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, wanted to preserve slavery during the Civil War.

The Confederacy was formed in 1861 by eleven Southern states that seceded from the United States. The main reason for secession was the issue of slavery. The Southern states were heavily dependent on slavery, and they feared that the abolition of slavery would undermine their economy.

The Confederacy fought the Civil War to defend the institution of slavery. The war ended in 1865 with the defeat of the Confederacy, and slavery was abolished.
