The abolition of slavery

The most significant outcome of the Union's win was the abolition of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation, which President Abraham Lincoln issued on January 1, 1863, declared all slaves in the Confederate states to be free. The 13th Amendment to the US constitution , which was ratified in December 1865, officially ended slavery throughout the whole nation.
