History of North America

When did ATMs become popular in the US?

Automated teller machines (ATMs) first appeared in the United States in the early 1970s. Chemical Bank of New York City installed the first ATM in their Rockville Centre, New York branch in September 1969. It allowed customers to make deposits, withdrawals, and transfers, and quickly became popular. Other banks soon followed suit and began installing ATMs in their branches, and by the end of the 1970s, ATMs could be found throughout the United States.
