History of North America

Compromise of 1850 did all except?

The Compromise of 1850 did not include the immediate abolition of slavery. The compromise was a set of measures passed by the United States Congress that temporarily resolved the issue of slavery in the territories acquired by the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. The compromise included the following measures:

* California was admitted to the Union as a free state.

* The slave trade (but not slavery itself) was abolished in the District of Columbia.

* The Fugitive Slave Act was passed, which required all citizens to assist in the capture of escaped slaves.

* The territories of New Mexico and Utah were allowed to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery.

The compromise was controversial and did not fully resolve the issue of slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act was particularly unpopular in the North, and it led to increased tensions between the North and South. The compromise ultimately failed to prevent the Civil War.
