History of North America

When was the Lincoln penny first made?

The Lincoln penny, featuring the iconic profile of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was first produced in 1909. It replaced the Indian Head penny, which had been in circulation since 1859. The Lincoln penny was designed by Victor D. Brenner and was officially released on August 2, 1909, coinciding with the centennial of Lincoln's birth. It quickly became a popular and enduring symbol of American currency and has remained in production to this day.
