History of North America

When did the confederate flag start being used?

The Confederate flag, also known as the "Stars and Bars," was first adopted by the Confederate States of America in 1861. It was primarily used as the naval jack (flag used by ships) of the Confederate Navy and was occasionally used by Confederate armies. However, the well-known rectangular "Rebel flag," which features a blue saltire with white stars on a red field, was not officially used by the Confederate government.
