This battle was fought near Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg, launched a surprise attack on the Union Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General William Rosecrans. The Union forces suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat, but they were able to hold their ground long enough to prevent the Confederates from capturing Chattanooga.
The Battle of Franklin (November 30, 1864):
This battle was fought near Franklin, Tennessee, and was one of the last major battles of the Civil War. The Confederate Army of Tennessee, again commanded by General Braxton Bragg, launched a frontal assault against the Union Army of the Ohio, commanded by General John Schofield. The Union forces, despite being outnumbered, held their ground and inflicted heavy casualties on the Confederates. The Confederates were eventually forced to retreat, and this battle marked the end of their attempt to invade Tennessee.
