History of North America

Why did the government choose a northern route for transcontinental railroad?

The transcontinental railroad was not built along a northern route. In 1862, Congress signed the Pacific Railway Act, chartering the Union Pacific and Central Pacific to join the east and west coasts. The act specified a route along the 42nd parallel, which follows a more central path. Construction began in 1863 and the line was completed on May 10, 1869.
