During the civil war did union soilders fight against slavery?

The American Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865 and was a conflict between northern and southern states in the United States, primarily over the issue of slavery. The Union, or Northern states, fought to preserve the Union and end slavery, while the Confederate, or Southern states, fought to secede from the Union and maintain slavery. Therefore, Union soldiers fought against slavery during the Civil War.
