The American Civil War was not fought primarily between the North and South. Although there were regional differences between the two sides, the war was fundamentally a conflict over the issue of slavery. The Southern states were fighting to preserve their way of life, which included slavery, while the Northern states were fighting to abolish slavery and preserve the Union.
