Did James Buchanan always be a president?

James Buchanan was not always a president. He was born on April 23, 1791, in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania. He served as the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861. Prior to his presidency, he held various political offices, including U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania, Minister to Russia, and Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. After his presidency, he retired to Wheatland, his estate in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he died on June 1, 1868.
