History of North America

Why was Connecticut established?

The Connecticut Colony was established in 1636 by a group of English Puritans led by Thomas Hooker and John Haynes. The Puritans were fleeing religious persecution in England and sought to establish a new colony where they could practice their religion freely. They were also attracted to Connecticut's fertile land and abundant natural resources.

The Connecticut Colony was one of the most successful of the New England colonies. It grew rapidly and became a prosperous center of trade and commerce. The colony was also a leader in education and religious freedom. In 1662, Connecticut adopted a constitution that guaranteed basic rights to all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The Connecticut Colony played an important role in the American Revolution. It was one of the first colonies to declare independence from Great Britain, and it provided troops and supplies to the Continental Army. After the war, Connecticut became one of the original 13 states of the United States.
