History of North America

Did the Cherokee return to their homeland?

The Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the southeastern United States in the 1830s in what is known as the Trail of Tears. Approximately 15,000 Cherokee died during this forced relocation.

After their removal, the Cherokee Nation established a new government in what is now Oklahoma, where a majority of the Cherokee people currently reside.

So, while the Cherokee did not return to their original homeland, they did re-establish a nation in the present-day United States, preserving their culture and heritage.
