Can a vegan diet cause depression?

While a poorly planned vegan diet could theoretically contribute to depression, it is not an inherent consequence of veganism. In fact, some studies suggest that a vegan diet may be associated with a reduced risk of depression, particularly when it is rich in whole plant foods and adequate in essential nutrients. However, it is important for individuals on a vegan diet to pay close attention to nutrient intake, particularly vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids, to ensure proper nutritional status and overall well-being. To minimize the risk of nutritional deficiencies and their potential effects on mental health, working with a registered dietitian familiar with vegan diets is recommended.
