How did Woodrow Wilson persuade congress to enter World War 1?

President Woodrow Wilson did not persuade Congress to enter the United States into World War I. Although he urged neutrality early in the war, following repeated incidents involving unrestricted German submarine warfare and the British interception of the Zimmermann Telegram, Wilson requested a declaration of war on April 2, 1917, which passed a few days later after several weeks of debate.
