It is estimated that between 90,000 and 166,000 people died as a direct result of the atomic bombs exploded over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The majority of these deaths occurred in the immediate aftermath of the bombings, with many more people dying from the effects of radiation exposure in the months and years that followed.
