What Strategy did the US use to get Japan?

The US' strategy for invading Japan was known as the "Island Hopping" campaign. The campaign aimed to capture numerous islands on Japan's home soil to cut off the country from its resources, isolate its military, and bring the fighting closer to the mainland. By gradually working their way up the chain of islands, the US could bypass fortified Japanese positions, seize key air bases, and weaken Japan's defensive abilities.
