Portugal was the first country to bring Africans to the New World.

In 1441, Portuguese explorers captured the first group of Africans and transported them to Portugal.

They were then sold as slaves and used for labor on sugar plantations in Madeira, the Canary Islands, and the Azores.

In 1502, the Portuguese began transporting African slaves to Brazil.

By 1600, there were more than 1 million African slaves in Brazil.

Most slave forts were located in West Africa, along the coast of Guinea, and in the Caribbean.

Some of the most famous slave forts include Elmina Castle in Ghana, Cape Coast Castle in Ghana, and Fort Jesus in Kenya.
