A West African storyteller is known as a griot. Griots, also known as jali(in Manding languages) or geerew(in Wolof), serve as historians, genealogists, musicians, and poets in a variety of West African societies. They play a vital role in the cultural life of African society. Griots perform at a variety of community ceremonies, including those related to birth, marriage, and death. They also serve as advisors to African communities and individuals from a young age in their roles as "the keepers of oral tradition.'Griots typically belong to lineages of professional communicators or performers.
