History of Africa

When did the Europeans start enslaving africans?

The enslavement of Africans by Europeans began in the 15th century, with the Portuguese being the first to engage in this practice. The Portuguese initially used enslaved Africans for labor in their colonies in Africa and the Atlantic islands. As European exploration and colonization of the Americas expanded in the 16th century, the demand for enslaved labor increased significantly, leading to the transatlantic slave trade. This trade involved the capture, transportation, and sale of millions of Africans to European colonies in the Americas, where they were forced to work in plantations, mines, and other industries. The transatlantic slave trade continued for over three centuries and resulted in the forced migration of an estimated 12.5 million Africans to the Americas.
