Were African American in the union army paid an equal wage as white soldiers?

African American soldiers in the Union army were not paid an equal wage to white soldiers. White soldiers were paid based on their rank and were paid three times as much as black soldiers. Black soldiers were only paid $10 a month, while white soldiers were paid $30. This wage gap was due to the prevailing racism of the time, and it was not until 1864 that an equal wage for black and white soldiers was finally established.
