Why was he called Robert E. Lee and not edward lee?

Robert Edward Lee was named after his father, Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee III, who was a distinguished cavalry officer in the American Revolutionary War. Henry Lee III was known as "Light-Horse Harry" because of his cavalry exploits during the war. Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807, and was given the name "Robert Edward" in honor of his father.
