No, Magellan did not survive to see his ship round the southern tip of Africa. Ferdinand Magellan died on April 27th, 1521, during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. It was his second-in-command, Juan Sebastian Elcano, who completed the first recorded circumnavigation of the world in September of 1522.
