Historical story

Why did walk the salt march?

Mahatma Gandhi led the Dandi March, also known as the Salt March, in 1930 to protest the British salt monopoly in India.

- The British government had imposed a heavy tax on salt, which was an essential commodity for the Indian people. This tax was widely resented, and it became a rallying point for Indian nationalists.

- Gandhi believed that by defying the salt laws, he could show the British that the Indian people were no longer willing to submit to their rule.

- The Dandi March was a non-violent protest, and Gandhi was careful to ensure that his followers did not resort to violence.

- The March began on March 12, 1930, and Gandhi and his followers walked 240 miles to the Arabian Sea, where they made salt.

- The March was a huge success, and it galvanized the Indian independence movement.
