Historical story

How did they kill Salem witches?

Hanging: The most common method of execution for the Salem witches was hanging. The accused witches were tied to a rope or chain, hoisted up into the air, and left to hang until they died. Sometimes, weights were attached to the witches' bodies to hasten their deaths.

Burning: Another method of execution used for the Salem witches was burning at the stake. The witches were tied to a post, surrounded by wood and other flammable materials, and set on fire. This was a particularly gruesome and agonizing method of execution, and it was often used for witches who were considered to be particularly dangerous or evil.

Pressing: This method involved placing a heavy weight on the chest of the accused witch, which would slowly crush their body. This method was often used in conjunction with other forms of torture, such as beating or starvation, to force a confession from the accused witch.

Drowning: In some cases, accused witches were drowned. They would be tied up and thrown into a river, lake, or other body of water, and left to drown.

Stoning: In a few instances, accused witches were stoned to death. This involved throwing rocks or stones at the accused witch until they died.

In addition to these methods of execution, many of the accused witches were also subjected to other forms of abuse and torture, such as beatings, whippings, and sleep deprivation. These methods were used to coerce confessions from the accused witches and to intimidate others into not speaking out against the witchcraft trials.
