Rab is introduced as a young Scottish boy, who is one of the crew members on the ship. Johnny, wanting to join the ship, stows away on board. Rab discovers Johnny and helps him to hide from the captain until the ship is at sea.
Initially, Rab is skeptical of Johnny and keeps an eye on him, but as they spend more time together, they develop a close friendship. Johnny learns about seamanship from Rab and shares stories of his life in Boston. Rab also introduces Johnny to the world of music, playing the fiddle and teaching Johnny to appreciate different tunes.
Their first encounter sets the stage for a meaningful and supportive friendship that grows throughout the story, providing emotional sustenance to both Johnny and Rab as they navigate the tumultuous events of the American Revolution and the challenges they face along the way.
