William the Conqueror used a cunning tactic to force the Saxons to retreat. He ordered his men to set fire to the village of Beeding, which was located near the Saxon camp. The Saxons, fearing that their own camp would be next, abandoned their position and fled. This event is known as the "Sack of Beeding" and it occurred on 13 December 1066.
