What was a Tommy in World War 1?

Tommy was a colloquial name for a soldier during World War 1. It was most commonly used to refer to a British soldier, although it could also sometimes refer to soldiers from other countries.

Tommy was a nickname that was in use as early as the Crimean War, and it may have originated from a song called "Tommy the Trooper." During World War 1, the name was used to add a personal touch to the war reports. It was also seen as a way to humanise the soldiers and to make them more relatable to the public.
