Result of 1905 Bloody Sunday incident

The 1905 Bloody Sunday incident resulted in the deaths of hundreds of peaceful demonstrators in St. Petersburg, Russia, and led to the beginning of the 1905 Russian Revolution. The incident occurred on January 22 (9 January Old Style), 1905, when a peaceful procession of workers, led by Father Georgy Gapon, marched to the Winter Palace to petition Tsar Nicholas II for better working conditions and civil rights. The Tsar's troops fired on the crowd, killing and injuring thousands. The incident sparked a wave of strikes and protests throughout Russia and led to the formation of the first soviets, or workers' councils. The soviets played a key role in the 1905 Revolution, which ultimately forced the Tsar to grant a number of concessions, including the creation of a Duma, or parliament.
