Historical story

How does Odysseus finally return home?

After Odysseus had spent many years wandering and encountering various challenges during his journey back home to Ithaca, he finally returns with the help of the goddess Athena. Here's how his return unfolds:

Athena's Assistance:

Odysseus arrives on the island of Scheria, home to the Phaeacians. There, he seeks refuge and meets Princess Nausicaa, who offers her support. Athena assumes the form of a young girl and guides Odysseus to the palace of King Alcinous, the Phaeacian ruler.

Phaeacian Hospitality:

Odysseus receives exceptional hospitality from King Alcinous and the Phaeacians. At a grand feast, he recounts his incredible adventures, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the sorceress Circe, the land of the dead, and the island of Calypso. The Phaeacians are captivated by his tales.

Return to Ithaca:

After Odysseus finishes his storytelling, the Phaeacians decide to help him complete his journey home. They provide him with a ship, crew, and gifts. Under Athena's protection, they undertake the voyage to Ithaca and arrive discreetly to avoid any potential conflicts, as Odysseus anticipates troubles on his home island.

Disguise and Revelation:

Upon reaching Ithaca, Athena disguises Odysseus as an old beggar to protect him from potential enemies. He reunites with his loyal servant, Eumaeus, who welcomes him. Athena then advises Telemachus, Odysseus' son, about his father's return and encourages him to join forces with Odysseus to reclaim their kingdom.

Recognition and Reckoning:

Odysseus, still in disguise, enters his palace and observes the suitors competing for his wife Penelope's hand. Telemachus eventually recognizes his father with Athena's assistance, and they plan to eliminate the suitors.

Suitors' Contest:

Odysseus, still disguised, challenges the suitors to a contest involving his mighty bow. He demonstrates his incomparable strength by stringing the bow and successfully shooting an arrow.

Slaughter of the Suitors:

With Telemachus and Eumaeus by his side, Odysseus reveals his true identity and, aided by Athena, initiates the slaughter of the arrogant suitors who have plagued his kingdom.

Reunion with Penelope:

After avenging their enemies, Odysseus reunites with his faithful wife, Penelope. However, she initially remains cautious and tests his identity before they embrace wholeheartedly.

Restoration of Order:

With the help of Athena, Odysseus establishes peace and renews order in Ithaca. He regains his kingdom, reclaims his throne, and his family is finally reunited, thus marking the happy conclusion of his arduous journey.
