Sherman's surrender terms to Johnston included the following:
* All Confederate forces in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida would surrender.
* All Confederate military property would be turned over to the Union.
* All Confederate soldiers would be paroled and allowed to return home, but would not be allowed to serve in the Confederate army again.
* All slaves in the surrendered territory would be freed.
Johnston's surrender terms to Lee were much more lenient. They included the following:
* All Confederate forces in Virginia would surrender.
* All Confederate military property would be turned over to the Union.
* All Confederate soldiers would be paroled and allowed to return home, but would not be allowed to serve in the Confederate army again.
* The issue of slavery would be left up to the state governments to decide.
Sherman's surrender terms were stricter because he wanted to make sure that the Confederacy would not be able to continue fighting. He also wanted to make sure that the slaves would be freed. Johnston's surrender terms were more lenient because he wanted to avoid further bloodshed and he did not want to see the South punished too harshly.
