Why did joeseph glidden invent barbed wire?

Barbed wire was not invented by Joseph Glidden but by Lucien B. Smith in 1867.

However, Glidden did design a successful improvement on Smith's original design. His improvements enabled the wire to be machine-made, which greatly reduced the cost of production and made it much easier to install. He patented his design in 1874 and quickly became wealthy from his invention.
