Historical story

What did Martha do as a first lady?

Martha Washington did not serve as a first lady.

Martha Wayles Skelton married Daniel Parke Custis in 1750 and they had four children, only two of whom reached adulthood. When her husband died in 1757, Martha inherited more than 17,500 acres of choice lands and 300 slaves, becoming one of the wealthiest women in the New World. George Washington and Martha Dandridge Custis married on January 6, 1759, and settled at Mount Vernon, Virginia, where they spent their lives together. While George Washington was elected President in 1789, Martha never lived in the executive mansion in New York or Philadelphia, as neither city had a finished presidential residence.
