Historical story

When were silver dollars actually silver?

The production of silver dollars in the United States began in 1794, and they were composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. This composition remained unchanged until 1853 when the silver content was reduced to 89.24%. The production of silver dollars ceased in 1935, and they were not minted again until 1970 when they were struck in 40% silver. The production of silver dollars ended again in 1971, and they have not been minted in silver since.
