On December 15, 1864, Hood's force had been decisively defeated by the Union army under the command of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas at the Battle of Nashville. Before daybreak on December 16, the Confederates retreated in confusion to Franklin. Hood tried to rally his men at Franklin but to no avail. Hood finally turned his Confederate forces southward along the Natchez Trace toward Mississippi, and eventually took command at Tupelo.
