Martin Luther sparked the Protestant Reformation by publicly challenging the Roman Catholic Church's practice of selling indulgences. He believed that salvation was achieved by faith alone, and that indulgences were a way for the Church to exploit people's fears and superstitions. Luther's Ninety-Five Theses, published in 1517, is often seen as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
