Chinese and British scientists have announced the discovery in China of a relatively small (2.8 meters long from nose to tail) but formidable-looking stegosaurus, Bassanosaurus, which lived on Earth about 168 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic Period. It is the oldest stegosaurus discovered in Asia and perhaps the world, indicating that stegosaurs in general probably first appeared in Asia.
The researchers, who made the relevant publication in the "Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology", discovered fossilized bones of the back, shoulders, hips, legs and ribs of Bashanosaurus (Bashanosaurus primitivus). The name "Bashan" refers to the ancient name of the Chongqing region in China, where the stegosaurus was found.
According to the APE-MPE, stegosaurs are recognized by the large horn plates on their backs, their long tails and their tiny heads. They were quadrupeds, herbivores and their fossils have been found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. To date, 14 species of stegosaurus have been identified, and Bassanosaurus is joining them.
