Life moments of a black and white Athens in the 60s are captured in a documentary book about the city, its people and their daily life through the eyes of Katerina Zoitopoulos-Mavrokephalidou. Back when time was running somewhat slower and only ran on "tuned" clocks.
Acropolis, Holy Rock, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma, Varvakeios, Post Office Square, Omonia and Zappeion.
In the summer of 1966, Katerina Zoitopoulou returns to Athens from Berlin, having completed her studies in photography. She goes up to the Acropolis with a camera in hand and her wandering around the city begins. Faces, buildings and a big zoom in a city that changes every day. Unbeknownst to the then very young photographer – she has managed to capture the face and identity of a city that changes every day. A collection that he finally decided to make known with this special album. Today, some of the photographs are in the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.
All the photos, according to APE-MBE, are accompanied by captions signed by Nikos Delivorias. He characteristically writes in the preface of the album:"Certainly the faces of today's Athenians do not resemble those we see in Katerina's photographs. The center is not inhabited as it was then. And the city today has a different aspect. People no longer come down from the neighborhoods to the market to shop. And yet, whatever time you pass by Athena Street, you will find it full. The same from Aiolou and Monastiraki. And the tourists will always descend from the Acropolis, cross the Plaka and end up in the same places where the photographer passed in the distant 66".
The book is published by Xristos Marinis - Paraskini Publishing.
