Webinar:The occupation famine and the resistance movement in Athens

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI) at Columbia University is hosting the webinar "Walking in History:The Occupied Famine and the Athens Resistance Movement as Public History" with historian Menelaos Charalambidis on Thursday, April 15 at 19:00.

This month marks 80 years since the invasion and occupation of Greece by German troops during the Second World War. Starting from the outbreak of the deadly occupation famine in Athens in the winter of 1941-1942, which claimed the lives of at least 45,000 people and was the beginning for the development of one of the most massive urban resistance movements in Europe, the seminar poses as a key question:Why Are there no monumental traces of the great famine and the phenomena associated with it, such as the Resistance and rationing, in the urban landscape of Athens?

Based on the experience of the historical walks, which he has been carrying out in Athens since 2013, Menelaos Charalambidis proposes alternative ways of transmitting scientific knowledge to the wider public and explains how the public humanities can open in the public space discussions about difficult and traumatic events of the past, such as famine and cooperation with the conquerors.

A discussion with the historian Eleni Kyramargiou (National Research Foundation) and the audience will follow.

The seminar will be held in Greek and will be accessible at the following link:
