It is the duty of all of us to keep the memory of these tragic events indelible and alive, notes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Allied forces, an anniversary that commemorates the millions of Jews who were exterminated in concentration camps by the Nazi regime. He also emphasizes that Greece "will work non-stop so that those who gave their lives are never forgotten and so that humanity never again experiences such atrocities".
"The International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust is also a day of responsibility and obligation for all of us to fight against the attempt to deliberately degrade, even deny, the blackest page of modern European history" says the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is emphasized that our country pays tribute to the memory of millions of Jews, Greeks and non-Jews, while also honoring "the survivors of the Shoah by recognizing the indelible wounds they brought to their souls and bodies, as well as the heroic, selfless sacrifice of all those who protected those who they were mercilessly persecuted by the racial insanity of the totalitarian regime of National Socialism".
And the announcement continues:"Along with millions of other Jews, the Greek Jews and the Israeli communities of Greece fell victim to an unimaginable atrocity which resulted in their almost complete annihilation. The memory of these tragic events will remain indelible and alive. It is the duty of all of us to perpetuate it, in order to be a barrier against all forms of anti-Semitism, racism and intolerance, but also an example of avoidance for the new generations.
Since 2005, Greece has been a full member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and has assumed, with the Stockholm Declaration, the responsibility of preserving in the collective memory of our fellow human beings who perished in the Holocaust", notes the announcement of the ministry and adds that the assuming the Presidency of the International Alliance in 2021 is a practical recognition of its role in the fight against anti-Semitism and the protection of historical truth.
